CATAN unlike the many roll and move type games, introduced a simple concept. When you roll the dice, everyone in the game will gain resources if they have a village or city on that resource. So on their turns the players can trade with others, gather more resources and use those to build roads, more villages, and cities. They can also use them the buy soldiers to try to get the largest army. But do not hoard your resources long, there is a thief that might come and steal some them.
Unlike many previous boardgames, the goal is not to eliminate players. What fun is it to have friends over to play games, then during the course of the game one of them lands on your property and goes bankrupt or gets wiped off the board as you take their last country?

Victory in CATAN and in many of the new hot modern boardgames goes to those that do the best job. Are you getting the right resources to build your roads? Are your cities producing enough? Are you getting enough wheat to help your villages grow into cities? Those that do it best and the fastest often are the victor.
Points in CATAN are had for cities, villages, the longest road, the largest army and other things. The race is to ten victory points and will usually take about 90 minutes for a family of four to come to a conclusion.
CATAN comes in many different editions and has expansion sets to add levels of play or add more variety.
