The Roundtown Conservancy (operators of the Octagon House) recently received a $10.000 grant from South Central Power to help with the “Historic Structure Report & Master Plan (HSRMP) for the Octagon House, which is currently at risk due to deterioration. The HSRMP provides a comprehensive, long-term planning guide to direct the future rehabilitation and adaptive use of the historic building. Included in the report are a brief history, identification of historic features and materials, description and analysis of existing conditions, which have been completed. The requested funds will allow the report to be completed and will include the development of recommended treatment options, a program plan and conceptual design for eventual use, and a prioritized phasing plan with detailed opinion of probable cost.”
According to the information filed with the grant request, “The HSRMP is the first step in the rehabilitation of the Octagon House, which will benefit all in the community. Heritage tourism will contribute to economic development. Educational opportunities will be provided to students and the general public. Events will bring together the community. All will be able to take pride in the re-use of this unique historic architectural resource.”
The Roundtown Conservancy has been working with Heritage Architectural Associates since late 2017. This, along with the grants is part of what helped bring the long sought after “Historic Structure Report & Master Plan” to fruition. Heritage Architectural Associates along with the help of the Roundtown Conservancy president, Stephanie Sharpnack and the board of trustees has also helped the Conservancy in these efforts. Both organizations and the community are looking forward to the restoration of this unique structure.

The Octagon House was saved from demolition by a community effort back in 2004 when it was moved a half a mile to its current location. The community has been engaged over the years but a new excitement has been revived as some major hurdles have been overcome in the past year alone. The goal is the repurposing of the Octagon House into a multi-purpose facility that will offer historic interpretative educational exhibits, tours, and event space for festivals, receptions, lectures and art exhibits.
