In today’s age of CGI superhero movies and action-packed films, rom-com, and animated movies – sitting down to watch a simple movie about a whodunit mystery is a really nice change of pace. Although if I am going to be completely honest, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out is not at all simple – as the complexity of the mystery laid out before us takes a good amount of patience, an eye for clues, and a brain like Sherlock Holmes.
When the famous and wealthy author, Harlan Thrombey is found dead in his house the morning after his 85th birthday, it is ruled out as a simple choice made at Harlan’s own hands – but as we all know, there is always more to the situation at hand.

After the police pretty much rule out foul play, private investigator Benoit Blanc enters the scene – and ruffles everyone’s feathers. You see, detective Blanc is genius and well-known for being great at solving mysteries.
Hired anonymously to find out what really happened to Harlan Thrombey, the family and people closest to Harlan are told to remain in the area – as Harlan’s death was no mere suicide.
You’ll sit through a Clue-like experience, watching various flashbacks as Harlan makes some incredibly tough choices to cut off different members of the family from his fortune – making all of them guilty and capable of rash decisions.
It is up to Blanc to find out who is responsible – and as the story unfolds, things get more complex and more twisted and messy as they go along – just like pulling a knife out.
Highly entertaining and fantastic, brilliantly written and well played out – Knives Out does an incredible job of leaving you on the edge of your seat and demanding more.
It will also leave you questioning everything you once suspected and believed, as the truth unravels before your eyes – and the case is drawn to a close.
Knives Out is rated PG-13 for some strong language, intense scenes, and references not suitable for children – so I recommend this as a great movie for a Friday night out, a date night, or if you’re if looking for a suspenseful film to keep you on your toes.
