If you are interested in space exploration, you may enjoy reading Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. Hidden Figures takes you behind the scenes of the beginnings NASA and their quest for man to land on the moon. It provides a brief look into the control room and of astronauts and other authority figures at NASA meeting to plan their execution of blasting off into space. However, this true story provides a greater insight on the behind the scenes calculations and evaluations done by a group of African American women who managed to become highly educated mathematicians during the civil rights movement. Known as “human computers”, their struggles and accomplishments, both personal and professional, will amaze you and inspire you.
I found Hidden Figures hard to read at first because there are so many characters within the story to keep up with; but I’m glad I kept on reading. I love learning about our nation’s history and those who work behind the scenes to help create it. Those who give of their time and knowledge and receive very little credit. Hidden Figures was made into a movie as well. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it’s on my playlist. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
