Jan asks, “ I don’t want to spend a lot of money, but what could I plant on my porch that would look nice all summer and be easy to care for?”

I often flip through garden sites and through gardening magazines and look at the very elaborate container gardens filled to the brim with exotic and expensive plants. I must admit I have tried on several occasions with mixed results to copy some of the complicated designs!

As I walk daily through town I enjoy looking at the flowers people plant and how they display them. One thing I have noticed is the old saying, “less is often more,” is so true when it comes to containers. Some of the most classy looking porch containers are plantings of big red Geraniums in a nice pot on each side of the front door!

Geraniums are available in a variety of colors. While bright red is the old fashion favorite, I like the double fuchsia colored blossoms! Geraniums are nearly care free and easy. I think you have best results planting a large Geranium in a good potting soil.

Water potted Geraniums when the soil feels dry. In hot weather they might need to be watered daily. They do well in sun and light shade. Pull off the faded flowers and fertilize them monthly.

Geraniums on the front porch are not only easy, but gives your home the look of elegance and sophistication!
