The Writing Desk by Rachel Hauck Book Review

Tenley Roth’s first book was a success; written while she was grieving the loss of her devoted father who raised her in present day New York City, a successful author in his own right. Matter of fact, she comes from a long line of famous writers. But now as she works on her second book, she is feeling the pressure from her publisher and has developed a terrible case of writers’ block. When her estranged mother asks her to come stay with her in Florida while she goes through chemo treatments, Tenley is skeptical but feels she must go. Perhaps a change of scenery will help.

A century earlier, Birdie Shehorn, born and raised in the Gilded Age, is the daughter of an old money East Coast family. Her mother runs the children like she runs her household; tight and strict. Society appearances are everything and expectations of Birdie are to marry wisely and raise a family. However, Birdie loves to write, but must do so in private, as writing is not a profession or a hobby that her mother approves. She attempts to have her novel published but is rejected only to find several months later her book was in fact published under a famous author’s name. She doesn’t understand and seeks to find out why.

The story of ‘The Writing Desk’ by Rachel Hauck goes back and forth between Tenley and Birdie’s worlds, adding in some interesting twists and turns along the way; finally bringing their stories together in a surprising end that you will love. Another good read from author Rachel Hauck.
