OhioHealth will open the Neuroscience Wellness Center to community members starting May 19. The first-of-its-kind wellness center for those with neurologic conditions is located on the OhioHealth McConnell Campus near OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

This nearly 18,000 square-foot center is the first freestanding neuroscience wellness center of its kind in the country and serves as a central location for individuals with neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and others.

“The experience for members of the OhioHealth Neuroscience Wellness Center will be unlike any other in the entire country,” Dr. Brien Smith, vice president, OhioHealth Neuroscience said. “We were looking for a way to take the neurological patient journey beyond sick care, and this center allows us to do that as a true team. These condition-specific offerings are the perfect complement to care at our many neuroscience locations allowing members, caregivers and care teams to focus on the physical and cognitive needs of each individual.”

The member-based center will offer comprehensive wellness programs designed around exercise, education, and support delivered in a safe and welcoming environment, and all under one roof. The design features a glass-enclosed walking track, outward facing decks, as well as spectacular views of the courtyard, and more from the indoor walking track, exercise studios, and much more.

What makes this center so unique is the specialized equipment and teams in each space throughout. There will be exercise physiologists with top certifications, associates with training specific to working with the neurologic population, staff assigned to fitness floors answering questions and ensuring a safe environment, as well as baseline assessment for each new member. Members can schedule a one-on-one appointment with an exercise physiologist to develop a personal exercise program.

“Innovation is such an important part of care. What we have developed here with the OhioHealth Neuroscience Wellness Center takes the patient journey to the next level,” says Lauren Esposito, manager of the OhioHealth Neuroscience Center. “We know our patients are excited about having this dedicated space for them on their wellness journey, and we can’t wait for the community to experience everything this world-class center has to offer.”

In addition to neurologic-specific classes, all members will have access to group fitness classes such as boot camp, cardio, boxing, balance and barre, Pilates, yoga and more.

The equipment inside the Neuroscience Wellness Center can be accessed by each member no matter their ability. This includes a harness system to allow for freedom of movement without risk of falling, heart rate monitoring and equipment that is wheelchair accessible.

The center also brings already established OhioHealth wellness programs such as OhioHealth Delay the DiseaseTM, Stroke and Brain Injury Wellness, Movement for Memory, the John J. Gerlach Center for Senior Health, and the OhioHealth MS Wellness Program under one roof.

This world-class center is possible thanks to the generous support of donors. That generosity included a $12.6 million dollar philanthropically funded effort through the Building Strength for Life – OhioHealth Neuroscience Wellness Center campaign led by the OhioHealth Foundation. The lead gift came from John P. McConnell and the McConnell Foundation.

“Incorporating wellness is really closing a gap in neurological care,” Dr. Smith said. ”This has been the OhioHealth vision for quite some time, and we couldn’t be more excited to see it come to life now.”

The OhioHealth Wellness Center concept was designed by Gensler and built by Whiting-Turner.
