“What do you want to be when you grow up” is the top question adults ask kids. The answers would be things like “a firefighter, a doctor, a ballerina, scientist, astronaut or even an actress” the list is endless! Adults would say, “That’s a great idea!” and encourage us to be whatever we want to be.
As the years go by, and you’re just about to finish school, you’re asked that same question just with a slight twist and a lot more seriousness, “what are you going to do next year? What are you going to study? What are your plans?”
Be honest with yourself. Do you truly know what exactly you want to study after school? Do you even want to go to college? Do you know what you want to become one day?
It is a seriously tough question to ask yourself, and most of the time, the answer is “I’m still figuring it out.”
The debate about whether or not taking a gap year is a good idea is never-ending.
According to Denver Gap Year, statistics show that 60% of students who took a gap year decided on their major and realize their future career direction.
Just to put a nice red cherry on top of the cake, 70% of gap year participants traveled in a group, and the majority of those enrolled in a program offered by an approved gap year organization. Meaning you are not alone!
A gap year does not mean you have to stay at home and do nothing.
Instead, you can make a massive difference in a lot of people’s lives just by volunteering! Ponder on this for a second.
Volunteering is the purest act of selflessness. It is your way of giving back to the community and especially helping children of all ages boost their confidence and knowledge so that they, too, can follow their dreams! And you have the opportunity to go on an adventure of a lifetime as a bonus!
