2. France. During the 1940s when the Nazis were occupying Paris, “discotheque” was a type of nightclub where patrons danced to phonographic records. Disco became popular in the U.S. in early ’70s, emerging out of an urban subculture.
3. Lulu, born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie, in the 1967 film of the same name, starring Sidney Poitier. It was the best-selling single of the year, after staying at No. 1 for five weeks.
