How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior

I loved this story! Veronica McCreedy, an 85-year-old cranky old woman, is estranged from her only living relative, her grandson, Patrick. She is looking for a worthwhile cause to leave her fortune to besides her grandson. After seeing a documentary on penguins being studied in Antarctica, she finally decides this is where she wants her fortune to go. However, before making the decision final, Veronica wants to visit their compound and see the penguins for herself.

Careful travel arrangements are made by her assistant, and off she goes to Antarctica to see the penguins. The team of scientists living at the compound are hesitant on allowing such a visit from an elderly person, but finally give in. Veronica, a grouchy, old woman with her own health issues and a lot of spunk, convinces the reluctant team of scientists to rescue an orphaned baby penguin. Veronica takes on the responsibility of taking care of the baby penguin, who eventually becomes part of everyone’s life and, most importantly, has a profound effect on Veronica’s heart.
Her grandson, Patrick, comes to the compound looking for answers as well, hoping to ‘get to know’ his grandmother and find that missing connection. Together Veronica, Patrick and those living at the compound learn about family, love and just what brings everyone together. And, of course, it all happens because of the penguins. An enjoyable, heart-warming story that is a must-read. Enjoy!
