I stumble to the bathroom
in the middle of the night,
see a creature stirring
and get quite a fright.
A monster
with fuzzy, uncombed hair
that sticks out everywhere,
is staring at me.
I fall to the floor,
crouch down on all fours,
sneak out of the room
like a cat, one paw at a time.
I’m trying not to weep,
knowing I must set a trap
to catch this beast,
but my kitty-cats
think it’s time to play
and begin stalking me
like I’m their prey.
Their eyes peer at me in the darkness
doing that famous wiggle butt,
preparing to leap forward,
pouncing me with one mad dash,
causing me to fall over,
making me laugh.
Suddenly, I feel afraid,
for my cover is blown,
but I take a cue from my pets
and stalk this troll
attacking it from behind, without warning.
I grab a golf club
from the corner hall,
swinging it with all my might,
trying to hit him in the head
but I hear broken glass instead.
I flip on the light
and take a step back,
shaking my head in disbelief,
looking through the cracks of the mirror
seeing strands of messy hair,
realizing much too late,
it’s my own reflection.
