In May 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven was asked to give the commencement address at the University of Texas at Austin. He took his inspiration for his speech from the university’s slogan “What starts here changes the world”. Admiral McRaven shared ten principles he had learned during his Navy Seal training which helped him overcome challenges not only during his training but during his long Navy career and throughout his life. The ten principles are basic lessons that anyone can apply to their daily life; simple lessons that will change your thought process and actions while working to make the world a better place to live.
The title of the book reminded me of what my mom always told my siblings and I growing up “Grandpa always said to make your bed first thing every morning and you would be sure to have a good day.” Little did I know at the time that was mom’s way of getting us to make our own beds every day. However, I found out Mom and grandpa were right. Something as simple as making your bed in the morning can improve your outlook for the day. Admiral McRaven provides practical advice with good reasoning to his basic lessons on life. They are easy for anyone to follow and apply to their daily life habits. So, go ahead “Make Your Bed”.
