Just because the weather is turning doesn’t mean you should abandon your backyard. In fact, ensuring your backyard looks nice in the winter means you won’t only benefit from it during this time but will also prep it for springtime. A few calculated steps now will ensure your backyard is much easier to keep tidy once the weather begins to get warmer and also means you can enjoy crisp winter autumn evenings looking out over a stunning space. From planting ahead of time to getting your outside space looking perfect for winter, it is always best to be prepared. Here are five ways to get your backyard ready for winter.

Clear up your paths, decking, or paving

When autumn hits, the leaves soon begin to fall, and more tumultuous weather can blow leaves and other debris everywhere. Because of this, it is a good idea to ensure your trees and shrubbery are mostly bare before this step; otherwise, you will have to repeat it multiple times. Give everywhere a clean with a stiff, outdoor brush and water so that it will be much safer and less of a slip hazard when the frost arrives. It will also look much neater and require less cleaning once winter is done.

Take care of your beds
Before the winter truly takes hold, take the time to sort out your flower beds. Trim them back, get rid of the weeds, and get them looking in top shape. It is worth looking into some winter plants to spruce up your space too. You could consider adding mulch to your backyard, such as from Edrich Lumber, which can help protect your backyard and improve its appearance. It is more aesthetically pleasing than plain mud, can boost plant yields, involves less trimming and weed eating, helps the environment, and adds extra nutrients to your soil.

Install outdoor pathway lighting

Never underestimate the power of outdoor lighting, especially once the evenings are dark early. Use them to light up the pathway to your house, from your back yard to your shed, or around your flower beds. You can string up fairy lights to add a majestic, winter-wonderland vibe that will instantly brighten up your backyard. There are many options you can look through and find the ones that will best suit your space.

Plant bulbs ahead of time
Before the winter properly kicks in, it is time to get planting your spring flowers. Do your research and find which ones can survive the winter months and will bloom once spring rolls around. Look into the best soil conditions and how far apart to space them to ensure they have optimal growing conditions. Before planting new bulbs, be sure to dig up and divide any that look too close or crowded, or that you don’t want again for the next season.

These are just a few ways you can prepare your backyard for winter. By putting in the work now, you will be able to enjoy your backyard even more through the next few months and beyond.
