Becky asks if there are houseplants safe to grow around cats.

Cat lovers know, the little fur balls are notorious for getting into houseplants and chewing them. It is very difficult to train a cat to stay away from plants. Cat do what they want to do!

Thankfully, there are many houseplants that are perfectly safe to have around cats.

One of my favorite houseplants is the Rattlesnake plant or Calathea Lancifolia with its long-tapered leaves covered with raised dark green spots. It does well in indirect light and fine to grow around felines.

The green or variegated striped Spider Plant send out stems with tiny white flowers. It is an extremely easy houseplant to grow in indirect bright light. The only damage might be from cats playing with the tendril off-shoots hanging from the plant.

For something with a large range of colorful flowers, try growing African Violets. They produce masses of blooms when kept well fertilized. There is no guarantee cats wouldn’t dump over the pots, but the plants are harmless to your kitty!

In early winter Christmas Cactus begin setting flower buds and will bloom putting on a grand show. These easy to grow cactus are not the type of cactus with thorns and are perfectly safe around both cats, dogs, and people!

In addition, there are various ferns and palms that are safe around cats. If you think your beloved pet has chewed or consumed a plant, it is always wise to contact your vet for more information and guidance!
