3 Ways we can help our children with their mental health during education

It’s unsurprising that many parents feel more worried than ever. We learn more online about the dangers of the world, and while parents 20 or 30 years ago could have pleaded ignorance, the internet has made it easier than ever for us to worry, especially when it comes to the modern epidemic that is our children’s mental health. While many parents use homeschooling as a way to help give their children a foundation for developing in a healthy manner without the trappings of the modern school system, for those kids who are going through traditional education, it’s important for us to ensure they know how to look after their mental health. Here are some ways to help your child help themselves.

Look at the School

Not every school is alike. Some schools certainly don’t give their children the same hands-on approach to looking after their well-being as others. You can look at the Alpine Academy Utah reviews to see how certain schools like this academy are helping their pupils through education, while also encouraging a greater understanding of mental health and wellbeing. If changing schools is not an option, it might be important to go directly to the source and speak to the headteacher and look at developing a better understanding of how children can look after their mental health. You can approach PTA meetings and make a substantial change.

Building Positive Routines

Everybody benefits from structure, especially children. If your child feels pressure due to a difficult school structure, you can think about something like homeschooling but while it’s not physically possible for most parents, you can look at their lives outside of school and build a better structure. Mental health difficulties can stem from a number of sources, so the best thing you can do is to give them greater support outside of school. Looking at their sleep duration and quality, and ensuring they have the right outlets for their aggression or anxiety can all help create a positive structure.

Encouraging Resilience

School is a tough time for any child because they either want to fit in but they don’t or they have struggled with their studies, and when you throw puberty into the mix, this can result in a lot for children to go through. We can say that once they’ve come through the other side, this will help them understand how far they progressed, but it can feel incredibly difficult going through the school system. Encouraging resilience is such a massive subject, but you can start to work with them in smaller ways. You can build certain routines, but you can help them with certain aspects of the discipline. Martial arts training is something that can give them that inner confidence that can help them to deal with situations in school that would otherwise be stressful.

We have to remember that we feel powerless in those situations beyond our control. Therefore, giving our kids the tools to feel more in control of a situation will develop their resilience and their sense of self and, therefore, could benefit their mental health.
