Is Shopping Designer Actually Worth It

We all have dreams of being able to buy whatever clothes we want. Like that scene in Pretty Woman, in which Julia Roberts is given just about the coolest life-swap ever, and is suddenly able to buy all the clothes she could ever dream of in one day. Just imagine that. Of course, that’s a movie, and life isn’t really like that. Most of us are hustling to get by and can’t afford an all-designer wardrobe. Plus, with the presence and pressures of Instagram to have the best drip all the time, many people spend all their spare income on the fanciest labels, just to look cool. But are these items actually worth it?

Picking The Right Items

If, like most of us, you can’t afford to shop designer all the time, you could still have a few staple items which are high quality. This means things you will use or wear most days, such as glasses, handbags, coats or shoes. If you work in a professional environment, having a statement designer handbag which you carry every single day is a great way to shop designer without breaking the bank. The things you will use every day and will be seen by everyone are the items you might want to consider being designer.

Taste Over Labels

An item being designer is not enough. If you are going to wear something or carry something designer most days, you have to actually like it. Too often, people purchase designer clothing or accessories simply because they are from a famous label. If you are considering buying a designer item, ask yourself if it’s really “you”. If you’re only acquiring a designer item to show off the fact you own it, that’s not a good enough reason.

Timeless Classics

The point of designer items is that they are, in theory, well-designed and better quality than high street brands. That means a designer item should last a lifetime, not end up in a donation box by next year. If looking to shop in a designer store, make sure you consider your future self. Is this item a timeless classic you can have forever, or is it a passing trend that won’t look good in a year’s time? Spending hundreds, or even thousands on one item means you should be getting many years of use out of it, not just this summer’s Instagram photos.

The Real Thing

If you decide to buy a designer item, ensure you purchase it directly from the brand store. There are so many scams and fakes out there, all trying to overcharge you for a fake item. This can lead to serious devastation, if you figure out you have lost money on a poor quality fake designer piece.

Conclusion

In conclusion, shopping for designer items is sometimes worth it. If you have given enough thought and research into the piece you are buying, and feel the use you will get from it will be worth the money, go for it!
